Teacher

John started teaching professionally in 2012 having gained his PGCE at Cambridge . Over the course of the past 13 years in the profession, he has held positions of responsibility including Head of Strings (at St George's College, Weybridge, 2012-2016), Director of Music and Assistant Housemaster (at Epsom College in Malaysia, 2016-2019) and, presently, Head of Instrumental Music at Magdalen College School, Oxford.

Teaching is a pleasure, not just for the subject that John teaches and loves, but for the people he has the privilege to work with and teach. A sense of humour is important (the necessity for having 'British values' in education being taken to a slight extreme in one concert for the Coronation of King Charles, as seen in the photo on this page!) and John always teaches with kindness and respect. Pupils should want to be involved in music because it is fun, social and offers joy.

John has taught OCR A Level, as well as Edexcel GCSE and A Level courses, is the lead for ABRSM and Trinity Music exams, visiting music teachers and runs a successful music outreach project in his current role, which he particularly loves. He is always willing to invite visiting musicians to the department to inspire our musicians, and is equally keen to adjudicate for music competitions at other schools and run workshops, as he has done in the past.

Workshops

John has experience of running workshops as varied as African Drumming and Composition in Primary Schools, Samba Drumming in Belgium with young people, to Orchestral come-and-play days. His dynamic and enthusiastic personality combined with his love of music makes the workshops he runs fun and engaging. If you'd like John to come to your community for a workshop, please do be in touch via the contact form at the bottom of this page.

Adjudicating

Adjudicating musical events is as joyous as it is intimidating; one doesn't want to upset a partisan audience of participants! John has had great fun and success in adjudicating music competitions during the past decade, here and overseas, and is always happy to listen to musicians from other communities as part of their music competitions during the academic year. Be in touch via the Contact Form if you'd welcome his adjudication expertise.
